Home favourite Marianne Vos easily won the road race world title to become only the second woman to complete an Olympic/World double in the same year.

The Dutchwoman attacked two-thirds into the 129km race on her home roads of Limburg to secure the rainbow jersey.

It was her second Road World title and ended a run of five consecutive second places as she won in a time of 3:14:29.

She was 10 seconds ahead of Australia's Rachel Neyland with Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini third.

Mass crash at world road race

Britain's Nicole Cooke was the only other female rider to do the Olympic/World double when she triumphed in 2008 but she finished 60th this time around, more than five minutes down.

Team-mates Emma Pooley and Sharon Laws were 15th and 39th respectively with only 80 riders out of 132 starters completng the course after a mass crash early on in the race.
